Facts:
  • I have the 45 here, (The flip side is "Mummy Dosent Live Here Anymore" by Fred and his fabulous dancing chickens. I do believe that the song was recorded before 1974.. Will have to dig out the 45 and see if I can trace down when it was released... (Putt)
  • Song Lyrics:
This is the story of the little-known explorer Fred, and his faithful dog, Rover.

Fred and Rover wandered in the desert,
When by a sandstorm they were tossed,
And soon with the aid of an English compass,
They were well and truly lost.

    With Rover, dear Rover,
    Dear faithful old Rover,
    Rovers are roving and free.

Day after day they stumbled on,
    Beneath the burning sky,
On the third day all their food was gone,
On the fourth, their water ran dry.

    With Rover, dear Rover,
    Dear faithful old Rover,
    Rovers are roving and free.

On the fifth day, Fred ate his boots,
Gave Rover a heel to munch,
Shirt for breakfast, pants for dinner,
And he dreamt of Rover for lunch!

No, no! Not Rover, not Rover,
    Not faithful old Rover,
Rover was as hungry as he.

And by the seventh day the hunger,
    Had almost made Fred blind,
And looking down at his only friend,
This thought went through his mind:
    "I'll eat him."

No, no! Not Rover, not Rover,
    Not faithful old Rover,
Why should it be Rover, not he?

    And on the tenth day,
Fred took old Rover in his arms,
And stroked him behind the ears,
And sank his teeth into Rover's hind leg,
    And consumed him.

    Ah Rover, dear Rover,
    Dear scrumptious edible Rover,
Rover was as hungry as he.

And when he had finished off his friend,
There was naught left upon the sand but bones,
White bones, licked clean and bare,
And as he wiped his mouth,
    Fred looked down at them,
    And softly he said:
"Rover... would have liked those bones."

    Ah, Rover, dear Rover,
    Dear faithful old Rover,
    Rovers are roving and free.

    And free!
