The memorial celebration was last night. Not a concert or a show, it was a truly emotionally overwhelming (in a very positive way) tribute to Logan. The event was free and open to all. We were greeted at the door with photos and songbooks to enjoy and take home afterward. There were special cookies and Schweppes ginger ale (pronounced Schweepies like the song). The centerpiece consisted of two sets of Logan's songs performed by Santiago, a fine band from Pandacide Records (Logan's label) who also organized the event.

Before the second set were a number of heartfelt spoken tributes from Logan's family (with many intimate personal details - you had to be there), friends (including Dr. Demento who left his signature top hat and tails at home and spoke only of Logan - he compared "Goodbye My 4-track" with "Sergeant Pepper" in importance), and fans (some of whom had traveled from as far as Portland, Oregon and Central Florida).

Before the live music and during the break, there was a screening of a new movie with music scored by Logan in a back room of the venue where Logan oftern performed (an old movie theater converted into a community center, decorated in punk style with skate ramps along the edge of the main floor).

Near the end of the evening the stage (fronted throughout the evening by Vanilla the plastic snowman) was opened to the people who had responded to the call for musical participation, with a wide range of technical skills (mostly excellent). For all their subtle twists, Logan's songs are so robust they can withstand a less than perfect performance and still sound great.

When it was my turn to do Lizard and Fish, I duly warned Logan's family and friends of what was about to happen. During and after, they responded with pure love and grace. Drummer Alex Navarro, a true hero, stepped up and kept the whole thing together. The band also backed some of the other volunteer performers, and closed with the title song from Goodbye My 4-track.

Although I never met Logan or even saw him in person, by evening's end I felt that I had come to know Logan quite well. I am grateful to Logan's family and friends for allowing me (and everybody who came) to receive Logan's love through them in this very special way.

They're asking everybody to come and perform Logan's vast repertoire.
Especially older material as the current lineup is top heavy with tiny songs.
So I signed up to inflict my rusty chops upon Lizard and Fish.
Wish me luck, for Logan's sake.

I got the Very Tiny Songs CD in the mail this week. It's totally awesome and has liner notes written by Dr. Demento himself. I highly recommend it.

I got to hear this show today. Quite a tribute to Logan. Dr. D had to have done a lot of production in getting this show ready. To paraphrase doc, we was very impressed by the music, the comedy and the production of Logan's work.

According to Dr D's website, it'll be the first show in January and he will also be honored in the next newsletter (#137)...........Pete

I'm assuming Dr.Demento will do a tribute sometime in January-He was a huge fan of Logan.

I saw an interview with Dr. D a year or two ago. The interviewer asked him what he listened to when he was listening for pleasure, and he said "Goodbye My 4-Track" was one of his favorites and what he had on his CD player at that moment. Or words to that effect.

This has not been a good year for Dementia. First our own Hackinbush, then the northwest's Madman Moskowitz, now Logan. Damn.

Very sad to die at only 29...and it's unusual to see
the word "sucks" in an obituary...but he was right,
it did suck to have to be dying so young.

...btw checked out what "Riley Raccoon" is;
as a raccoon fan I'll have to check out that
page of your site further!

One of the very-frequently-played songs on my iPod is Logan's "Calculator Love". The guy was definitely a genius. I would like to request "Calculator Love" for the next Mad Music Show.

Logan, you will definitely be missed!

Perhaps the next Mad Music Show should begin with one of his songs... as a tribute.

Like most I knew this was coming, but it still was terrible news. Logan was so talented and so young - I will really miss him - he was one of the greats.

Although we knew it was coming, it's deeply depressing all the same. Logan Whitehurst had a child-like joy in creating, and he communicate that joy to us all.

My small, inadequate but sincere tribute at www.thejudge.me.uk/Not_blog/Not_blog_20061204.htm

Thanks for bringing that to our attention, Kyle.
I knew he wasn't doing well, and that his time was drawing near... But that doesn't make it any less unfortunate.
He was not only an awesome musician, but a truly wonderful guy.

I also found Logan to be a very brilliant and funny guy. My entire family found much happiness and good times through his music. We will never know what other gifts he had planned for us.

Damn...

The world lost a very brilliant man this afternoon, and way too early at that. Logan Whitehurst, of the one-man, one snowman band Logan Whitehurst & the Jr Science club died this afternoon after a long bout with brain cancer. My God, the guy was brilliant. What's especially tragic here is what a young man Logan was. He was only 29. He still had lots to achieve, and he should've been able to do it.

I've had some limited contact with him, first on the old mp3.com where I found him, then later with some conspiring about a Prosthetic Brain music video that never came into fruition, then more recently when he wrote a Riley Raccoon theme song for his "Very Tiny Songs" project, and he was also one of the first to buy my latest TV's Kyle album. I'll always regret that I never got a chance to know him better.

My heart and condolences go out to his family, Nemo, and everyone who was as inspired by him as I was.

So long, Logan. You were one of the good ones.
